Neurodevelopmental Disorders

   autfmorfoloji-1

 These disorders, which include schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, specific learning difficulties and intellectual disability, constitute one of the leading health problems worldwide in terms of disease burden and economic loss, according to the data of the World Health Organization. Neurodevelopmental disorders are a group of diseases that are faced with great difficulties in which many genetic and environmental factors play a role, are due to reasons such as not fully elucidating their mechanisms, lack of objective biomarkers to be used in the diagnosis and/or follow-up, effective treatment for very few, and slow and expensive drug development processes. The most effective approach in dealing with these problems caused by neurodevelopmental disorders is to increase the basic knowledge we have about how these disorders arise.

The main research focus of our laboratory is to elucidate the molecular etiologies of neurodevelopmental disorders with the "from genes to cognitive functions" approach.

In this context, we are continuing our research on these issues;

- Detection of new candidate (epi)genetic changes associated with neurodevelopmental disorders
- Revealing the genotype-phenotype relationships of known/newly defined (epi)genetic changes with a multidisciplinary perspective and detailed clinical phenotyping
- Establishment of disease cell models to elucidate the functional significance of these changes
- Examination of (epi)genetic factors associated with higher cognitive functions.
