Migraine and Aura Issues Discussed at NÖROM Headache Meeting

The second “NÖROM Meetings: Headache” event was held on May 27, 2025, under the moderation of Prof. Levent İnan from the University of Health Sciences and Assoc. Prof. Doğa Vurallı from Gazi University. The causes of migraine, its symptoms, and current research on the relationship between cortical spreading depression (CSD) and migraine aura were discussed in a multifaceted manner at the meeting.

The opening speech was made by Prof. Yıldırım Sara from Hacettepe University. Prof. Yıldırım Sara explained the neurophysiological basis of cortical spreading depression (CSD), its relationship with migraine, and the effects of some medications on CSD.

Following Prof. Yıldırım Sara, NÖROM center director Prof. Dr. Hayrunnisa Bolay Belen made a presentation and stated that CSD was insufficient to explain migraine aura. In detail, she stated that CSD has a limited spread in the human brain and that CSD cannot fully explain aura symptoms.

Prof. Tahir Yoldaş from Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University drew attention with his presentation based on drawings of patients experiencing migraine aura.
